Sacraments and Sacramental Rites

According to our Book of Common Prayer (pp. 857-58), sacraments are "outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace," and "grace is God's favor towards us, unearned and undeserved; by grace God forgives our sins, enlightens our minds, stirs our hearts, and strengthens our will." Baptism and Eucharist (The Lord's Supper) are the two great sacraments of the Gospel. Other sacramental rites which evolved in the Church include matrimony (marriage), confession (reconciliation of a penitent), unction (anointing for healing), confirmation (laying on of hands by a bishop for strengthening by the Holy Spirit), and ordination (for deacons, priests and bishops).
